Influenza cases are on the rise, and health authorities have called on the public to get vaccinated to protect themselves and the community against the “potentially serious disease”. According to SA Health, there have been 1,921 notified cases of influenza in South Australia this year, compared to 1,255 for the same period last year.

Debt-ridden properties

Three debt-ridden properties in the district were auctioned by the Naracoorte-Lucindale Council last week to recoup unpaid rates and legal costs of up to $100,000. The council says it had to put the properties under the hammer as it had exhausted all other options to recover the debts.

Mayor calls for phone to be reinstated

Reconnecting the telephone at Lucindale’s Health Centre would be a first step towards healing a rift between the community and the $243 million Limestone Coast Local Health Network (LCLHN) which slashed its services. Naracoorte Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross hoped the phone line would be reinstated by the end of last week, or early this week.

Naracoorte’s former Morris Bakery has been sold to a local buyer. The value of the sale was not disclosed to The News because of legal agreements. Still under contract with conditions to be cleared, the property, including the plant and equipment, was sold through a “privately negotiated deal before auction.”

The Education Ministry has begun work on creating a model for an inclusive learning facility in Naracoorte. During the government’s country cabinet visit to MacKillop, Naracoorte South Primary School highlighted that students with additional learning needs do not have the option of attending a special education setting within their own community.

LAST night, Tuesday April 2, a secret meeting regarding nursing services at Lucindale was scheduled to be held behind locked doors. Patients, public and the media were excluded from the private gathering in the town’s rarely used council chamber. With an “invitation only” guest list which expanded from “a chosen few” to around 24 people.

There is an urgent need for more aged care workers in the district. And mayor Patrick Ross says the sector is of vital importance within any community, and ours is no different. Mr Ross said the district’s aged care provider was aware of the need for growth and development and was in the process of developing a strategy for Naracoorte for the future.
